Kill the Filibuster. Stop pretending that this legislative boat-anchor somehow helps the Senate govern better. Nathan and I have written about this before, but anyone can see how Republicans are using this obstructionist excuse. We aren’t idiots. We understand the miserable reality of it.
A few Democrats are protecting the filibuster. They insist we need it as an essential bulwark against majority overreach. It’s a sacred tenet, not just an uncorrected administrative error from 1806. Yadda, yadda, yadda.
All those people who talk about “preserving the filibuster?” They’re lying idiots.
Why? First, every Democratic Senator can watch their Republican ‘colleagues’ working to undermine our democracy. Voting rights, gerrymandering, and voter intimidation aren’t ‘overreach.’ And yet they’re willing to stand aside as Republicans work out their mistakes from the last insurrection. All because they want to obstruct the Republicans when the time comes. That’s where we are.
Now get real: Trumpists will kill the filibuster the instant they get a majority. Sen. Mike Lee already started laying the groundwork with his stupid vaccine mandate amendment. (Lee got the Senate to drop the filibuster ‘just this once.’) In a time when Trumpians cheerfully gut every guardrail that might slow Trump’s clownish march to autocracy, the filibuster will be gone faster than an unwanted Supreme Court nominee. That’s why the filibuster apologists are idiots. Are they stupid, or did they take lessons?
(Well, there’s a third option: the apologists are liars. Sen. Joe Manchin may simply be blocking any pollution reductions because almost all his income depends on massive pollution.)
Kill the filibuster now. It’s already living on borrowed time. End it now and we can still do some good before Republicans send the next round of shock troops.
