The Washington Post hasn’t learned much about the party of bad faith. Today, they’re obsessing over the lie about unity and healing from the Republican Criminal Enterprise. Earlier, didn’t most House Republicans vote to overturn our democracy? It was just a few weeks ago. It’s the same party of sedition and insurrection. And big surprise: the GOP leaders are lying again. We already know Republicans started shouting their “Unity!” brainworm to eat the truth. Republicans voted — and acted — to overthrow the democracy. Because they failed, now they’re lying to distract us. Any editorial about Republicans should mention sedition and insurrection, with extra points for ‘anti-democratic.’ The only story here was the Republican lie about unity and healing.
And yet, here we are. The Washington Post swallowed that “Unity!” brainworm like it was a nugget of deep-fried candy-coated wisdom. The lead editorial in the Sunday Post print edition is “What Unity Looks Like.” The subheading “No, Mr. Biden’s opening acts do not betray his promise to heal the nation,” made it clear. The online version was simpler: “No, President Biden has not already renounced ‘unity.'” Look, if you’re right, and Biden didn’t just renounce unity, then the real event is the Republican lie. Isn’t it?
Big media swore they’d learned from their mistakes. They examined themselves and found they’d grown so much! And then they fell back to the same cock-up they always do. First, they repeat the lie. Optionally, the article quotes someone else repeating the lie. Then sometime much later, they sorta rebut the lie. Sorta. But only after saying it a few more times.
The editorial’s headline and subhead presented and repeated the lie. At the end of the first paragraph, the editorial quoted a tweet from Senator Tom Cotton. “President Biden promised unity, but his first action was to kill jobs.” Paragraph end.
Next paragraph:
In fact, there was no contradiction. In the United States, unity does not mean that one side gets everything it wants.
“No, President Biden has not already renounced ‘unity’“, Washington Post lead editorial, January 24, 2021
“My God in heaven, that’s too spicy! Can you somehow make it softer, so the words don’t hurt Republican ears?” The Post just quoted a serial liar who tossed out a dripping pile of a Tweet. Somehow, they managed to leave the source and his past reliability unsaid. Why? Obviously, the editors hoping their readers will infer the unspoken story for themselves.
Look, WaPo, holding back won’t help you. Republicans just tried to overthrow the government and lost. They’ll do anything to distract us. This time, they’re trying to lie about unity. Why is our media trying to help them? At first, it was some distorted sense of fair play, but now? Maybe they’ve been cowed by all the conservative agitprop? Because hiding won’t help. That big bully GOP will still call you ‘the liberal media’ as they steal your lunch money.
OK, try this scenario. You’re walking down the street, and you hear the alarm from a bank up ahead. You see a burly guy with a heavy 5-o’clock shadow run out of the bank. He’s wearing a black and white striped shirt and black mask. Then you see he’s got a revolver in one hand and a canvas bag with big dollar bill signs in the other. Now a policeman walks up next to you. When mask-guy sees the uniformed officer, he waves the gun vaguely at a crowd across the street and screams, “That pervert over there is having sexual relations with a watermelon!” Is the correct response to stop the officer and insist there isn’t convincing evidence that the guy across the street knows any local watermelons personally?
This should be easy. Now, Republicans are blubbering that lie about unity because they need a distraction. Later, they’ll act all butthurt to drive us off the first investigations. After that, we can expect to see a super-vocal GOP outrage machine try to derail the special counsel completely. If that works, we’ll never know how deeply the conspiracy ran. There’s some evidence that Republican donors helped bankroll the January 6th insurrection. Plus, we have reputable testimony that Republican legislators helped the insurrection leaders plan the attack.
After the lie about unity and healing fades, there’s be another. I expect Republican’s next brainworm will be “Deficit!” That’s what they always do when America elects a Democrat. Will the news be just as flat-footed at that lie?
