We need to get better at dealing with President Donald Trump. The election is less than 90 days away, and Trump knows he’ll lose any fair election. He knows that perfectly well. I suppose that it’s a good thing for Trump that he planned to cheat anyway. We have four years of experience with Trump’s incompetence, lying, lawbreaking, and corruption. That follows decades of Republican Party mendacity, corruption, and bad faith. By now, we should understand how a minority party keeps itself in power.
Republicans will Cheat
We already know the basic math: a minority party can’t win reliably democratic elections without cheating. Why does America still have trouble dealing with dishonest behavior from Trump and the GOP? I know it’s true, but it puzzles me. We are perpetually shocked each time Republicans break our laws, traditions, or just common decency. We’re shocked – shocked! – to find they lied to us. After Trump spewed over 20,000 lies all by himself, you’d think we’d catch on. That’s on us more than them; both Trump and the Republican Party are reliably disingenuous.
If we expect more Republican lies and lawbreaking in the future – and we should – then we need to get smarter, and quickly. Trump will cheat anywhere he can, and he can probably rely on the full backing of the corrupt Republican party. The modern Republican Party depends on election corruption to stay in power, so it’s not like they’ll stop. We need to stop reacting and spend more effort anticipating what they’ll do. If we keep waiting until after each new Trump or Republican scandal, we’ll always be a day late and a dollar short.
