The Mad King chortles in his commode. Iran just attacked American targets in Iraq and says they have already launched more. Nobody should be surprised. After the United States publicly assassinated the top Iranian military official, Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, we knew something like this would happen. So now that the most obvious action has happened, what will President Baby Trump do?
American strategic goals (supposedly) drive our military actions. So what is the goal of the assassination, or our role in Iraq? Trump and his mouthpieces have cast unlikely possibilities like chaff. The Republican talking points shift every hour trying to keep up with changing events. And we already know they’re nonsense. The Secretary of Defense is contradicting the American President, and the Secretary of State is disagreeing with both of them. They’re making it up as they go.
Trump ordered the assassination to distract us from impeachment. We all know this. He didn’t have any plan or any other goals. If Trump or Pompeo had real military reasons, we’d have heard them by now. Instead, Trump is using his office for his venial, personal, political goals. And much worse, Trump appears willing to kill hundreds of Americans, along with an unknown number of Iraqis, Israelis, Saudis, and whoever else ever supported America.
American military planning will have actions and countersteps for this first reaction. Since that was the obvious next step, they wouldn’t have ordered the assassination before they’d planned what came next. And I don’t believe any of that prior planning exists, because this wasn’t a military choice. This was the American King, Tiny Hands Donny acting unilaterally.
The Constitution doesn’t allow President Trump to declare war. Will Republicans allow this anyway? Obviously. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell already used the confusion to obscure the Republican plans for dumping the impeachment. Can’t let a good crisis go to waste.
And yet, here we are. What will the Mad King do next?
