As much as I lament that Democrats are the new party of “Not being Republicans” — and yes, it still drives me nuts — now it feels like the Republicans can’t see any action of their own beyond tearing down whatever the Democrats did.

Think about the Republican agenda.  First priority was easy: beat the Democrats.  That’s become their overriding, first priority, dishonest, eye-gouging, “we don’t care if everything else burns down” obsession.  I got that part.

And for all of my surprise and shock, they won.  Hands-down.  Republicans control the White House, the Senate, Congress.  They’ve nominated most of the sitting Supreme Court.  By hook or by crook, they got it all.  They even control the majority of news sources, while intimidating the remaining media outlets into some kind of weird ethical paralysis.

So, ‘paralysis’?  Think about it.  Is there any good reason at least one of the White House press corps hasn’t, at some point, calmly asked Sean Spicer why he and his boss lie almost every single time they open their mouths?  It’s not like they’d be giving away a trade secret or anything.  Trump can’t give you the time of day without compulsively dropping another whopper.

But here we are: Republicans won.  Now what do they do?  Gleeful cackles, hand rubbing, and get to work!  Repeal the ACA!  Rescind every regulation Democrats ever enacted.  Cancel every trade deal Democrats negotiated (TPP and possibly NAFTA).  Back out of every negotiated agreement ever associated with a Democrat (Paris climate, NATO).  Drop out of anything that smacks of measured leadership.  Oh, and re-implement Jim Crow nationwide, but don’t forget to target the queers, trans, and pinkos this time.

And, since Democrats apparently were acting all way grown-up and everything, Republicans now spend half their time acting out like spoiled infants.  We’re talking about a serious bunch of whiners and ninnies.

This doesn’t make sense.  Why would Republicans go through all that work to get elected, when all they’re trying to do is tear down everything the other guys did.  Are they shooting for some spittle-flecked tabla rasa?  Did they change into the Anarchist Party when I wasn’t looking?

Don’t Republicans have anything they wanted to do?  I know they were mostly against stuff, but there must have been something they ran for, right?  Outside of the obvious kleptocracy, I mean.  I know building new stuff is harder than tearing things down, but come on, guys!  Could they even define themselves without Democratic references?

I wish Republicans could at least pretend they had some loftier goal than “We’re gettin’ ourselves Russian-oligarch-level rich, baby!”.
