I still live with the Zebra Myth.

I’m pretty sure I’m still living in the past. I try to talk a good game, I pretend I know the score, I aspire to be sophisticated, and talk about perceptions, but I haven’t come to terms with modern life. I think I’m missing something critical.
Even Time Magazine is wondering if we’re at the end of Truth as a virtue.
Maybe it’s because I’m a southerner. Still. For me, someone’s reputation is important. I see things through the lens of honor. Honor is a virtue that’s slow to create, and easily shattered. I know it’s silly now, but really, it’s hard to break with the past.
I look at politics through the lens of honor. When I catch someone clearly lying to me, I’m usually done with them. I know they’re untrustworthy. It’s a simple calculation. If they lied to me once, they’ll do it again. You already know that.
But there is no referee who can make this better. Too many news people are content to simply declare “The Truth”, and leave things there, returning to the same font of open lies tomorrow.
There is nobody in the Presidency who has any honor left. Not the President, Vice-President, any cabinet official, spokesperson, et al. And I know they’ll all lie to me tomorrow, and pretty much every day after.
There is almost nobody in the federal government from the Republican party who hasn’t lied to my face. I know they’ll lie to me tomorrow as well.
They have no honor. And until they start telling me the real truth, I won’t care what justifications they pretend to espouse.
And before you start, no, not all politicians lie that same way. This is a new and terrible change.
Liars. It’s not complicated. Don’t just repeat the lie with a question mark.
