Remember when Trump announced that ISIS leader al-Baghdadi was dead? How bad is Trump as a leader? He can screw up what should have been a shining moment for the military and his administration. Trump smothered his good news. We go through Trump’s announcement so you don’t have to.
There need to be consequences for doing bad things. If there aren’t, the rule of law fails. But Republicans refuse to correct President Trump in anything. That approach doesn’t work for children; it’s especially bad with a man without internal checks or balances. Trump will compulsively search out the things we hold dear and try to wreck them with a hot, quenchless anger.
Will Republicans ever admit the truth? President Donald Trump is morally indefensible. He’s a self-destructive narcissist who compulsively violates laws and norms. Republicans normally attack someone like Trump reflexively. Instead, because he’s one of them, he gets a free pass. Worse, the Republican party, already out of control, follow him off that cliff. They know they’re killing their party for a generation, but they can’t stop.
Trump will be impeached, and while it’s unlikely, he might be removed from office. Its’ even slightly possible that the equally vile Mike Pence might go with him. The next in succession is the Speaker of the House: Nancy Pelosi. But, as giddy as the idea makes me, it’s both a political problem and an ethical mistake. The New York Times said it first, and while it annoys me, they’re right.
Who will be the voice of conservatives now that the GOP is disgraced?
Think about the Republican party’s future. Suppose the corrupt Trump administration ends peacefully instead of a Republican coup. The GOP already showed they would burn America down before they’d relinquish power. They bet their future on America falling before the check comes due. What will they do if we’re still a democracy in a year?
Trump is being impeached because he asked a foreign power for a personal benefit. Republicans counter there was no quid pro quo, which is a separate offense, and a deliberate distraction. And a lie, it turns out. It’s hard not to take satisfaction at how the Republicans, dealers in bad faith, were so quickly caught out in this particular lie.
America urgently needs to stop Turkey’s massacre in Syria and protect the Kurds. Turkey started bombing Syrian (military and civilian areas) yesterday, and this morning, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan claimed to have killed hundreds of people, and he’s probably under-counting the civilian deaths. This is a stain on everything America holds dear.
The climate crisis isn’t hard to find. We first saw sharp declines in amphibian populations in the 1980s, in what’s now a worldwide mass extinction. Other studies reported declining insect populations as far back as 1840. And now Cornell reports that bird populations have dropped 29 percent since 1970. And then there are the aquatic species, coral bleaching, and more. The Climate Crisis is clawing its way up the food chain.
