Because he can’t understand metaphors, Trump revisits ‘the wall’ and makes it even more destructive.

I know it’s easy to forget that Donald Trump is severely dysfunctional. No, he’s not neurotypical, for what that buys you. (Is that why MAGA is so sincerely and furiously defensive about using ‘retard’ again?)

Nobody in MAGA or the GOP wants to acknowledge Trump’s weirdness. They pretend he’s ‘joking’ (he has no sense of humor). They’ll say he’s just trolling people, as if that were better. Trump is just ‘plain-spoken’ (not compulsive!). No matter what he does, he’s really just another felonious, billionaire, man-of-the-people.

So, here’s a small reminder that there are places where Trump’s mind isn’t like most of us.

Remember Trump’s 2016 Presidential run, filled with shouty, red-meat nonsense? At one point, his advisors added ‘the wall’ to his stump speech. It was supposed to be a simile: “a border as strong as a wall.” They wanted to remind their easily distracted candidate to talk about immigration. You know, like a big boy.

But Trump’s mind couldn’t grasp an abstract idea. Just couldn’t do it. To him, the only way ‘that ‘the wall’ made sense was if it was a real, concrete-and-steel wall. Later, he insisted it had to have holes or windows. You know, so you can see when people catapult heavy bundles of drugs over it.

No, I’m not kidding. And this was a decade ago, so it’s not from any recent decay.

It’s not as if Trump ever looks back. His handlers even pretend it’s a virtue that Donnie can’t stand the smallest self-examination. Bring up something he’s done, and he’ll reflexively insist it was perfect. Expect a moment of mental masturbation with made-up numbers and big, strong guys with tears in their eyes. Introduce any doubts, though, and Trump’s reaction veers into ugly insults and then spirals way out of control. I expect him to start throwing junk from his (unused) desktop. Anything to make those humiliating questions go away.

Why won’t Trump allow himself any reflection? I assume he detests looking at himself. Is that where Trump grasps the full reality of how awful he is? If so, that might be the only place where we all agree with him.

Anyway, if Trump can’t shout something down, he does the next best thing: he doubles down. Someone suggested that building a physical wall across the border was a bad idea. All Trump could do after that was what you’d expect: add more ‘wall’.
