The major news media have shockingly terrible war reporting. The highlights aren’t just shockingly uninformed; they show a pro-Russian bias. And I’m not just looking at conservative media like Fox. The Washington Post, the New York Times, NBC, they’re all terrible. Even MSNBC didn’t find the military expertise to explain the critical role of logistics. Instead, check out Daily Kos and their Ukraine updates.
“Pro-Russian bias,” you ask? Yes. The war maps showed the Russian-occupied territory in red. They illustrated Russian troop movements in big red arrows. But nothing Ukrainian. How could they ignore all the Ukraine forces? Even after the Russian advance stalled and Ukraine started logging military successes, the maps still dropped the defensive lines.
And about those Ukrainian military gains? Barely mentioned. The common knowledge insisted a Russian must inevitably triumph. They all quoted Stalin: “Quantity has a quality all its own.”
The best open-source war reporting I’ve seen? Look in the Ukraine Updates in Daily Kos. Every few hours, they post another ‘Ukraine update.’ They have tons of immediate reporting.
More importantly, they have cogent and well-informed analyses of what the events really mean. Here are a few recent highlights:
- Russia says it’s pulling out of Kyiv, so what exactly does that mean?
- Russian’ super weapons’ are a no-show on the battlefield.
- Russia would be losing even if it had the best supply lines.
- ‘Our only guarantee is the Ukrainian Armed Forces’.
And some of the key stories from the last few days:
- The story of Russia’s 4th Armored division and Ukraine’s biggest victory to date.
- Don’t expect much from the negotiations in Istanbul.
