President Donald Trump visited Walter Reed Medical Center last Sunday, Nov. 17. The White House shrouded Trump’s visit in dubious claims. Most press speculation has been cutting. But before we get lost, I want to wish the President good health.
In today’s tribal groupthink, we can be vicious animals. At a certain level — political speech, media coverage, talking head analyses — we treat any weakness like the scent of blood. All the news stories focused on the unusual nature of the trip, and how the subsequent White House explanation was unlikely and insufficient.
All of those questions are valid, but we’ve missed that first, most important ethical issue. We wish the President no ill and hope he and his doctors can resolve any health issues quickly. We forget that ethical underpinning at our peril.
Yes, we strongly disagree with President Trump on almost everything he says or does. We’re trying to drive him from office because he’s despicable. We’re hoping for the humiliation of the criminal enterprise that the Republican Party of Trump has become. Most of us at 3SR advocate for legal prosecution of all the administration’s many criminal acts and, where appropriate, punishment. Most of us support the House impeachment inquiry and, if the Senate finds him guilty, we want Trump and his cronies removed from office. Trump and the Republican party are a disease on our democracy. This is a test of our principles and our national will.
But we’re not animals. This is a political, ethical, and legal disagreement, not blood-sport. We can disagree with all that Trump stands for, and still wish President Trump the best health and hope that this medical incident, whatever it is, will be resolved without long-term harm to Trump or his family.
