I can’t figure out why the Democrats in the House are struggling to decide whether to investigate President Donald Trump’s possible crimes. I guess knowing all those hidden details will be a good thing eventually. Really, though, Trump’s crimes are already in the public record. The man is guilty as sin.
This should be easy. Trump can’t tell a lie without later blurting out an on-camera contradiction. You don’t have to search hard. Yes, when Trump fired Comey, it was obstruction of justice.
Keep going. Is Trump accepting money from foreign interests? Sure. Did he lie about official federal actions? Yup. Did Trump commit felony-level campaign violations? Yeppers. Did Trump and his administration lie about separating children from their parents? Several times, and yesterday Trump lied about it again to Chuck Todd.
Is lying to the American people a crime in general? Naa, not for most of us. But if you’re the President of the United States, and you lie about your criminal actions, that’s special. Back when Nixon was President, he lied in similar, if milder, ways about his crimes. Congress wrote Nixon’s dishonesty into the first Articles of Impeachment
As I type, Trump and his White House are ignoring multiple subpoenas from Congress, they deny black-letter law about disclosures, and they’re actively disobeying their Constitutional obligations to Congress. When we drag them into court, they argue that the Constitution doesn’t apply to them.
Before you ask, yes, you can contest a subpoena. You have to petition the court and make your case; the court can overrule an illegal subpoena. The White House has done none of that, choosing instead to simply ignore every single Congressional subpoena. All of them. These aren’t voluntary; each denial is a felony.
White House representatives lied to Congress so many times I can’t count them. These are crimes whether you’re under oath or not. When confronted with these lies, the White House abetted the deceptions.
President Trump personally violates the Hatch Act with every campaign rally and every press conference. Trump and his staff break our laws almost weekly. If you play the “Count the Felonies” drinking game, you’re putting your life at risk.
So we’re already well past ‘illegal.’ By all means, investigate Trump’s dubious official actions and denials for their legal compliance. Find out the truth about child separation, gutting the EPA, denying science from… almost everywhere, and trashing the USDA. Uncover Trump’s shady finances. Confront his multiple instances of obstruction and retribution against his enemies.
But please god, stop pretending that we’re just not sure if Trump has committed crimes. We can fill out most of the impeachment inquiry by reviewing newspaper headlines, and now we have the obstruction in the Mueller Report for the icing. We already know Trump is guilty.
