I just counted the Trump tweets, starting at his first mention of Hurricane Harvey until a few minutes ago. I thought it might give me a view into the heart of Trumpness. (Plus, it’s still better than actually reading the damn things.)
Trump first mentioned Hurricane Harvey on August 24th, a day before landfall. Since then, Trump has focused tons of his limited attention on Harvey. He tweeted lots of surprisingly helpful links, he retweeted weather maps, he repeated his praise for himself and others, Trump and Melania even pretended to visit Houston. Overall, he tweeted on Harvey’s impact on Texas and Louisiana 49 times.
Trump tweeted about Hurricane Irma 30 times. To his credit, he included emergency declarations for Florida, and then mentioned the US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Trump did one more “Florida. Oh, and the US VI and Puerto Rico.” And then the remaining 28 Irma tweets only mentioned Florida.
Trump tweeted 28 times about his UN trip, including pictures of every wonderful despot he met. He posted 28 tweets about his campaign visits and events. Trump has tweeted 29 times about the NFL players to distract us from how his family and staff all used private email for government work, and I expect that number to rise a lot.
Trump tweeted 18 times about healthcare, mostly to curse at people about their votes. He tweeted 13 times threatening insults and violence against North Korea. (Who we now seem to be at war with?) Trump tweeted 13 times on immigration (both for and against DACA, somehow), 11 tweets on tax cuts, and seven tweets castigating Hillary.
And Trump tweeted six tweets about Puerto Rico: a couple of ‘hearts and prayers are with you’ tweets, the ‘Florida and those other guys’ disaster announcement, and then nothing.
Today, after news shows went medieval on his butt about it, Trump spat out these three additional tweets:
Texas & Florida are doing great but Puerto Rico, which was already suffering from broken infrastructure & massive debt, is in deep trouble..

…It’s old electrical grid, which was in terrible shape, was devastated. Much of the Island was destroyed, with billions of dollars….

…owed to Wall Street and the banks which, sadly, must be dealt with. Food, water and medical are top priorities – and doing well. #FEMA

So… devastated, destroyed, no water or food, and billions of dollars of…
Debt, which someone (else, presumably) must deal with. But they’re doing well, somehow.
Even though 60% of the island has no running water, we still can’t reach broad areas, and there’s no timeline for when we’ll restore water, electricity, or even contact.
Puerto Rico’s crops have been destroyed, with rough estimates of 90% losses this year. Basically, everything, including mature trees, so it’ll be more than one year for us to replant. Even before the hurricane, Puerto Rico imported 85% of its food, mostly from neighboring islands that are now also destroyed. And yes, because of many screwups, both locally, federally, and financially, Puerto Rico was heavily in debt before the disaster and close to default.
Trump never mentions “Hurricane Maria” once, in any tweet. Maybe he didn’t bother learning the name?
Does Trump know that Puerto Rico is part of the US? Does he care? (No, scratch that last one. Of course not, but Trump doesn’t care about anyone outside himself and his inner circle, so that’s not really a special measure.)
So what’s the Trump plan for recovering in Puerto Rico? Trump is the American President, and even though the people there are brown and scary for Trump, Puerto Rico is also part of America. This is one of Trump’s responsibilities.
Where is he? It’s been days without much to show.
