Some things are hard not to notice. Like Trump telling Mexico to drop dead.
After Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, Mexico offered significant aid to America. They provided huge support after Hurricane Katrina, with meals, portable water treatment facilities, and the like, and they made a similar offer now to Texas. They did this despite Trump’s insults because denying aid to hurting people would be insane.
The President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, did not even bother responding. His citizens needed that aid, which could have helped thousands. He didn’t so much as acknowledge the offer.
Last week, Mexico was hit by an 8.1 Richter earthquake, the worst in a hundred years. It was felt over 600 miles away in Mexico City. The death toll has been 96 so far, which is more people than were killed in America by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma combined. With many people still trapped in collapsed buildings, Mexican authorities were struggling to respond.
And then the Mexican Gulf coast was hit by Hurricane Katia. While only a category 1 storm at landfall, the wind, and heavy rains made the earthquake response much harder. I know that at least two more people died in mudslides. Mexico was forced to withdraw their (still unanswered) offer of aid to Texas because they needed more aid for their own people than they could provide.
Trump hasn’t offered Mexico any American aid. Trump hasn’t offered condolences, which has been the minimum standard so far. He wasn’t suggesting any hopes, thoughts, prayers, or any other feelings, because he hasn’t responded at all. The White House appears to be ignoring the entire disaster, even as Senators, Congresspeople, Governors, and many less privileged people have said so much more.
Because why? It’s only brown people? Trump is still butt-hurt because of his goddamn wall? There is no answer I can see other than the obvious: Trump isn’t President, he’s just a sociopath in the White House.
This isn’t who we are.
