Watching the violence in Charlottesville, I was struck: where were the police? The rally was expected to draw violence. The police had allowed both sides to have weapons, chemical sprays, helmets, body armor, and more. The police boxed the white supremacists and violent anti-fascists into a space, then withdrew.
Withdrew from groups expected to react violently? What on earth was their justification? Did the police have their own goals? Was this result what they wanted?
Were we just set up?
