Here’s an odd thing. The FBI is headquartered in the J. Edgar Hoover Building in downtown DC. If you’re not in the area, you’ve seen images on TV for years.
Iconic as it is, it’s old and broken down. The phase “falling apart” gets a lot of coverage. They’ve been looking to move to a new, modern building for a decade now. They’ve done the planning, put out feelers, and looked around. There were three reasonable sites in nearby Maryland and Virginia. Both states actively courted the FBI because they’d bring thousands of local jobs. There were plans, and proposals, and concessions, and bidding.
And yesterday, abruptly, the General Services Administration (GSA) cancelled the entire search for a new FBI headquarters. My wife pointed out how weird that really is, if you look at it.
The Trump administration claims they’re worried that future costs might be too high. Democrats wondered out loud whether Trump, who clearly wishes the FBI didn’t exist, is working to make that goal real.
The GSA didn’t modify the bids, or suggest changes. They simply cancelled the entire thing.
My assumption is that it’s retribution.
