I can’t claim I thought of this, but once my wife mentioned it, I had to agree.
Unless Trump was wearing a bugged carnation in his lapel, he doesn’t have tapes or recordings of the Comey conversations. The dinner was in the President’s residence, not the oval office. I kind of doubt the President’s personal staff were drilling bugs into the historic woodwork.
But…. Imagine someone puts together a few voice actors who can sound plausibly like Comey and Trump. Suppose they acted out a few possible scenes that made Trump look better.
Now imagine some dodgy, fake-news site. You know, the kind that’s surprisingly well-funded drawing little advertising traffic? Imagine that site suddenly released ‘bootleg’ copies they purport are from the White House ‘recording system’. Every Fox-affiliated station would instantly put those recordings on rotation, along with just enough careful disclaimers to forestall direct legal action.
Of course the recordings would be nonsense, but you know? I wonder if that dirty trick would work.
