The Comey testimony had so many bombshells it’s hard to summarize it, but I wanted to touch on Sen. John McCain. He was listed as an ex officio member, which means he isn’t a voting member, but they let him ask questions. He was the last questioner.
The most charitable interpretation I’ve got is that the GOP leadership shipped him in to tar Comey. I’m guessing someone handed him some attacks to throw.
McCain was unhinged. I don’t mean that I disagreed with him, although I did, but that McCain was struggling to make sense. He kept getting names wrong, he seemed to be struggling to get words out, and he couldn’t keep any of his talking points straight. I guess he was trying to use the Clinton email thing to accuse Comey of a double-standard, but it was all came out like word salad of mumbled memes. Comey carefully explained the timelines several times, but McCain would just squint harder and stumble out his original mistakes.
There’s a long tradition of politicians deliberately misunderstanding important issues so they can make cheap political points for the evening news. This didn’t seem like that. This seemed like McCain really and truly wasn’t able to take in what Comey was saying.
Did McCain just wandered in like an incoherent bum off the street, and nobody was willing to stop him?
