Wilbur Ross is, among other roles, the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Cyprus PCL, and the bank’s majority shareholder. The Bank of Cyprus PCL is a murky, closed back that is reputed to be a favorite of Russian oligarchs. Since the second largest shareholder is, in fact, a close friend of Putin and one of those oligarchs, that’s a pretty easy rumor to believe.
Trump nominated Mr. Ross, a man of only moderate standing, for Secretary of Commerce, and Republicans approved his nomination along party line. I haven’t read the questioning, but I didn’t hear much about any questionable ties to Russian money laundering.
