Did the New York Times spike the article?
In the printed version of today’s New York Times, the paper did have an article about the DHS investigation on risk from immigrants and refugees. According to White House announcements before the study was complete, it was supposed to conclude that Trump’s Muslim Ban was justified based on the seven countries cited. Instead, it concluded that “Country of citizenship is unlikely to be a reliable indicator of potential terrorist activity.” The administration tried to bury the study, and when it was leaked to the Associated Press, White House sources called it ‘politically motivated’, and that they’d try again until they got the conclusion they wanted.
Many sources considered this a critical indication of Trump bias and manipulation.
The Times article was on page A20, on the left, below the fold, the last article in the National News section.
I’ve been struck several times now with the difference between the online and print versions of the Times. The online version seems careful and cautious, but the print version is almost timid by comparison. Where the online version will have headlines like, “Trump lies about <recent stuff>”, positioned near the top of their webpage, the print version buries the same article deep in the paper, under a more anodyne, “Trump Asserts News; Critics Disagree” headline.
Honestly, if Trump lies about something to the public, the fact that he lied is the most important part. The truth is second. What particular lie he told is far down the list of what’s really important.
But not according to the print Times.
