I’m loath to give armchair psychological analyses much weight, but there’s an interesting New York Times letter to the editor today: Mental Health Professionals Warn About Trump. It’s by two retired professionals, and it’s a short, interesting read, but here’s the paragraph that caught my eye:
Mr. Trump’s speech and actions demonstrate an inability to tolerate views different from his own, leading to rage reactions. His words and behavior suggest a profound inability to empathize. Individuals with these traits distort reality to suit their psychological state, attacking facts and those who convey them (journalists, scientists).
My first reaction is easy: no shit. Shrinks decided long ago not to evaluate public figures (the American Psychiatric Association’s 1973 Goldwater Rule). That’s a good rule, generally.
But now that we have journalists and Democrats challenging his wonderful, beautiful, amazing presidency, it doesn’t take a mental health professional to know that Trump will overreact.
